Pagoda of Zojoji Temple, Akabane

Ando Hiroshige's woodblock print depicts the five-story pagoda of Zojoji Temple in Edo-period Tokyo, framed by the temple's ornate red gates and surrounding landscape. A train passes in the middle distance—a deliberate anachronism showing Japan's modernization during the 1850s. The composition uses Hiroshige's signature technique of layered recession: architectural elements in the foreground, water and vegetation in the middle ground, and the pagoda silhouetted against a luminous sky. Part of his *One Hundred Views of Edo*, this series established the landscape print as a vehicle for documenting urban change. Hiroshige's influence on Western artists proved foundational to the development of modern perspective and color theory.
