Hilltop View of Yushima Tenjin Shrine

Hiroshi Awatsuji, Japanese, 1929–1995 · 1865

Hilltop View of Yushima Tenjin Shrine
This woodblock print depicts a shrine precinct overlooking the Edo landscape, rendered in the ukiyo-e tradition of detailed topographical views. The composition employs aerial perspective, positioning the viewer on an elevated platform above grid-patterned fields and a waterway lined with buildings and winter vegetation. A figure in blue approaches the shrine gate while others navigate the snowy grounds. The print demonstrates the period's sophisticated spatial conventions: the architectural framing device at left, graduated color planes receding into distance, and careful attention to seasonal detail. Part of a numbered series documenting Edo's celebrated sites, this work represents the documentary impulse in Japanese printmaking that would influence modern landscape representation.
