Andō Hiroshige's woodblock print depicts the tidal flats and waterways of Shiba, a commercial district in Edo (modern Tokyo). Wooden pilings and moored boats punctuate the turquoise water, while cormorants dive for fish in the foreground—a traditional fishing method still practiced along Japan's coasts. The dramatic red sky and distant hills frame this working landscape. Part of *One Hundred Famous Views of Edo*, Hiroshige's series pioneered the landscape print as a vehicle for documenting urban transformation. His bold use of color gradation, spatial depth, and compositional asymmetry influenced European artists and established conventions of modern printmaking.
