Nihonbashi, Clearing Weather after Show

Utagawa Hiroshige's print depicts Nihonbashi, the merchant bridge at Edo's commercial heart, during winter clearing. Multiple sightlines stack vertically: Mount Fuji anchors the distant horizon, while foreground activity fills the composition—wooden pilings, river traffic, warehouses, and crowds of figures conducting business. The artist employs the ukiyo-e woodblock format to orchestrate spatial depth through atmospheric perspective and selective color.
