Iris Viewing

Ando Hiroshige's final series depicts leisure scenes from Edo-period Japan. This print shows visitors at an iris garden, a popular seasonal outing. Women in layered kimono and yellow umbrellas gather along a path bordered by blooming irises and a stream. Men in darker dress stand in the background near distant pine trees. The composition uses Hiroshige's signature perspective—a large foreground tree anchors the right edge while the landscape recedes into pale sky. Calligraphic text in the upper cartouche identifies the location. As one of Japan's most prolific landscape artists, Hiroshige developed compositional techniques—dramatic angles, atmospheric gradation, human figures as scale—that influenced Western printmaking and visual narrative.
