Autumn Day

Ando Hiroshige, Japanese, 1797–1858 · 1858

Autumn Day
Ando Hiroshige's final woodblock print depicts a leisurely autumn afternoon at a scenic overlook. Figures in contemporary dress stroll beneath trees displaying golden foliage, gazing toward a distant bay where sailboats dot the water. The composition employs Hiroshige's characteristic use of atmospheric perspective and seasonal color to convey mood and place. Created near the end of his career, this print exemplifies the ukiyo-e tradition of landscape portraiture. The cartouche containing classical poetry and the red seal authenticate the artist's hand, standard conventions of Japanese printmaking that influenced Western illustration and visual narrative for generations to come.
