Landscape Sketch with Chocorua and Walker Pond, New Hampshire

Daniel Huntington, American, 1816–1906 · 1862

Landscape Sketch with Chocorua and Walker Pond, New Hampshire
Daniel Huntington's pen sketch captures a New Hampshire landscape with characteristic Hudson River School sensibility. The composition arranges foreground vegetation—trees and shrubs rendered in quick, gestural marks—around a calm pond, with Mount Chocorua rising in atmospheric perspective across the middle distance. Huntington's linear technique, economical yet descriptive, conveys recession and spatial depth through varying line weight and density. The sketch exemplifies nineteenth-century landscape artists' practice of field studies, quick notational drawings made from nature to inform larger studio compositions. Huntington (1816–1906), a prominent American painter and president of the National Academy of Design, produced thousands of such working studies throughout his career.
