Study for 'Scientific Group'
Daniel Huntington, American, 1816–1906 · 1858

Daniel Huntington's preparatory sketch depicts a seated gentleman in mid-nineteenth-century dress, rendered in ink with careful attention to pose and fabric. The figure leans forward in contemplation, his overcoat and vest rendered through confident cross-hatching. Beneath the finished study, faint architectural guidelines indicate the artist's methodical approach to composition and spatial relationships. This drawing exemplifies the academic practice of working from detailed studies toward larger historical or group compositions, a standard procedure for American painters of Huntington's era who combined portraiture with ambitious narrative scenes.
