Mountain Landscape, Adirondacks

Daniel Huntington, American, 1816–1906 · 1864

Mountain Landscape, Adirondacks
Daniel Huntington's paired landscape sketches capture the Adirondack region through two compositional studies of mountain ranges and forested valleys. The upper and lower drawings explore similar terrain from different vantage points, emphasizing the layered geology and dense tree clusters that characterize the region. These pencil studies demonstrate the artist's attention to atmospheric perspective and the subtle gradations of the mountainous terrain. Such preparatory work was essential to Huntington's practice, allowing him to develop the compositional elements and tonal relationships that would appear in his finished paintings. The sketches reveal the working method of nineteenth-century American landscape artists engaged with documenting and interpreting the nation's natural features.
