Sketches of a Woman with a Lute, Study for "Titian Showing the Entombment to Charles V and Clement VII"

Daniel Huntington's preparatory sketches explore the figure of a lute player in multiple poses and angles. Working in pen and ink on paper, Huntington developed compositional studies for a larger historical narrative painting depicting Titian presenting his masterwork to two of Renaissance Europe's most powerful patrons. The sketches reveal the artist's process: refining gesture, drapery, and spatial relationships before committing to the final canvas. This study method was standard practice for nineteenth-century academic painters working in the grand manner tradition.
