Studies of a Right Foot, Two Heads

Daniel Huntington, American, 1816–1906 · 1852

Studies of a Right Foot, Two Heads
Daniel Huntington's anatomical studies exemplify nineteenth-century academic training methods. The sheet presents three focused exercises: two male head studies rendered in profile and three-quarter view, and a detailed right foot rendered from multiple angles with careful attention to musculature and bone structure. Such drawings formed the foundation of figure painting instruction, allowing artists to master human anatomy before composing larger historical and narrative works. Huntington, a leading American painter of his era, produced numerous such studies throughout his career, developing the precise naturalism that characterized his acclaimed genre and historical scenes.
