The Artist's Wife Sophie
Daniel Huntington, American, 1816–1906 · 1853

Daniel Huntington's delicate portrait study demonstrates the refined drawing technique of mid-nineteenth-century American academic art. Executed in graphite with selective charcoal emphasis, the work captures a woman in profile with downcast eyes and carefully rendered hair. The restrained palette and precise linework reflect Huntington's training within the Hudson River School tradition. Such portrait studies served dual purposes: intimate family records and technical exercises in capturing physiognomy and subtle modeling of form. The work exemplifies the graphite portraiture that remained central to artistic practice even as photography emerged as a competing medium.
