Daniel Huntington, American, 1816–1906 · circa 1880

These pen sketches demonstrate the working method of American portraitist Daniel Huntington, who developed his compositions through rapid observational drawing. The loose, gestural line work captures physiognomic character and spatial relationships—the angle of the head, the fall of drapery, the play of light across facial planes. Such preparatory studies were essential to nineteenth-century academic practice, allowing artists to resolve compositional problems before committing to finished oil paintings. Huntington's facility with the pen reveals the disciplined hand required of professional portraitists working in the era before photography became the dominant medium for likeness-taking.
