Study of a Left Hand

Daniel Huntington, American, 1816–1906 · 1879

Study of a Left Hand
Daniel Huntington's preparatory sketches demonstrate the anatomical precision underlying nineteenth-century academic drawing practice. The two studies—one showing the hand relaxed, the other in a grasping position—reveal an artist's methodical approach to understanding form and gesture. Such drawings served as foundational studies for larger narrative compositions. Huntington, a prominent American painter trained in the neoclassical tradition, produced countless such studies throughout his career, working from both live models and casts to master the human figure's essential structures.
