Drapery Study for 'Tribute Money'

Daniel Huntington, American, 1816–1906 · 1852

Drapery Study for 'Tribute Money'
Daniel Huntington's preparatory sketch demonstrates the academic training fundamental to mid-nineteenth-century American history painting. The drawing isolates drapery—a core element of figure composition—rendered in graphite with careful attention to light, shadow, and fabric weight. Such studies preceded ambitious narrative canvases depicting biblical and classical subjects. Huntington (1816–1906), a leading Hudson River School painter, relied on these methodical studies to construct monumental works intended for public exhibition and moral instruction.
