Design for a Book Cover
Alice Cordelia Morse, American, 1863–1961 · 1887

This ornamental design by Alice Cordelia Morse exemplifies the decorative arts movement of the 1880s, when book covers became vehicles for artistic expression. The composition features intertwining serpents and scrollwork in bold black lines with subtle green wash, framing an empty cartouche—likely intended for a title or publisher's mark. The symmetrical, architectural quality of the design reflects principles of Art Nouveau and classical ornamentation. Morse, active in late-nineteenth-century American design, worked during a period when the boundary between fine and applied arts was increasingly blurred, and when illustrated book design commanded serious artistic attention.
