Design for a Book Cover

Alice Cordelia Morse, American, 1863–1961 · 1887

Design for a Book Cover
Alice Cordelia Morse's geometric design demonstrates the decorative vocabulary emerging in late-nineteenth-century American book arts. Symmetrical columns of stylized flowers—bell-shaped blooms in red, orange, and gold—anchor a composition organized by vertical axes and repeating motifs. The palette of muted greens, purples, and ochres, combined with the ornamental border of small circles, reflects aestheticist principles gaining currency in design circles. Morse, working during a period when women designers gained recognition in publishing and decorative arts, employs a flattened perspective and bold patterning that prefigures modernist approaches to surface design.
