Design for a Book Cover

Alice Cordelia Morse, American, 1863–1961 · 1896

Design for a Book Cover
Alice Cordelia Morse created this ornamental cover design during the American Arts and Crafts movement, when decorative book arts experienced a renaissance. The composition features a symmetrical arrangement of stylized botanical forms—undulating leaves and seed pods rendered in cream and pale yellow against a muted sage-green ground, with dark blue-black accents creating depth. Geometric striping and diamond shapes anchor the central axis. Morse's design vocabulary reflects contemporary interest in nature-inspired ornamentation and flat patterning, anticipating developments in early twentieth-century graphic design. The work demonstrates the period's embrace of handcrafted aesthetics and the decorative possibilities of the printed page before industrial mass production dominated book manufacture.
