Decorative Book Cover Design

Alice Cordelia Morse created this ornamental border design during the Arts and Crafts movement, when American decorative arts were being reimagined. The interlocking Celtic-inspired knotwork frames an empty central field, inviting text or imagery. Morse, a designer and illustrator active in Boston's artistic circles, exemplified the period's turn toward historical revival patterns and handcrafted aesthetics. Though this predates the modern comic strip's emergence in newspapers, it reflects the visual sophistication designers brought to printed materials in the 1890s—the same decade when sequential narrative art and speech balloons would begin transforming newspapers into vehicles for mass-produced visual storytelling.
