The Terrace, Central Park

J.W.&J.S. Moulton, Salem Mass. · 1875

The Terrace, Central Park
This stereoscopic card presents a manicured Victorian garden overlooking Central Park's formal terrace. The paired images, meant for viewing through a stereoscope, create an illusion of three-dimensional depth—a popular technology that brought distant landscapes and architectural views into middle-class parlors. J.W. & J.S. Moulton of Salem, Massachusetts produced these cards documenting New York's urban landscape during the park's early decades. The symmetrical composition, ornamental railings, and cultivated plantings reflect nineteenth-century ideals of refined leisure and the designed wilderness that Central Park represented.
