Driving Home the Corn

Winslow Homer, American, 1836–1910 · November 13, 1858

Driving Home the Corn
This wood engraving by Winslow Homer appeared in Harper's Weekly, the illustrated newspaper that shaped American visual storytelling in the mid-nineteenth century. The scene depicts a harvest procession: a farmer guides an oxcart laden with corn while family members and workers accompany the load along a rural road. Homer's composition employs the sequential space and human narrative typical of newspaper illustration, where multiple figures and moments occupy a single frame. The work demonstrates the technical precision of wood engraving—the primary reproductive method for newspapers before photographic processes—and establishes Homer's reputation for depicting American agricultural life with documentary detail and compositional sophistication.
