Pay-Day in the Army of the Potomac
Winslow Homer, American, 1836–1910 · 1863

Winslow Homer's illustration demonstrates the visual storytelling techniques that would define American comics. A central circular vignette labeled "Pay Day" anchors multiple surrounding scenes of Civil War soldiers—gambling, writing letters home, interacting with camp life. Speech balloons and sequential vignettes guide the viewer's eye across the composition, establishing spatial and narrative relationships. Homer's approach to depicting concurrent action, recurring character types, and readable expressions within a unified frame anticipated the formal grammar comics artists would systematize decades later. This print appeared in Harper's Weekly, where illustrated newspapers pioneered the visual vocabulary that newspapers and comic strips would eventually inherit and standardize.
