The Snodgrass Farmhouse, Chickamauga
Harry Fenn, American, 1845–1911 · 1887

Harry Fenn's pen-and-ink rendering documents a modest log structure near Chickamauga, Tennessee, site of a major Civil War battle. Fenn, a prolific illustrator for *Harper's Weekly* and other publications, specialized in architectural and landscape subjects. His technique combines fine cross-hatching with bold linear work to establish depth and atmosphere. The composition places the weathered farmhouse within its cleared landscape, with dense forest rising behind. A figure and dog occupy the foreground, lending human scale to the rural scene. Fenn's illustrations shaped 19th-century American visual journalism, establishing conventions for documentary imagery that influenced later editorial and fine-art practice.
