Villefranche
Arnold William Brunner, American, 1857–1925 · 1892

A pen sketch by architect Arnold William Brunner documenting a French coastal fortification. The drawing depicts a tall defensive tower anchoring the harbor at Villefranche-sur-Mer, with careful architectural notation of the masonry base, platform works, and surrounding fortifications. Small figures and a vessel at anchor provide scale. Brunner's economical line work captures both structural detail and atmospheric perspective, typical of nineteenth-century architectural studies used for reference and documentation before photographic recording became standard practice.
