Arnold William Brunner's pen sketch captures three beach scenes in sequential arrangement, a compositional strategy that would become fundamental to comic strip design. Three distinct moments—figures resting on rocky shores, a solitary observer, and grouped beachgoers—unfold across the page with economical linework and hatching that conveys landscape texture. Though predating the newspaper comic strip boom by a decade, Brunner's sequential panel layout and use of spatial compartmentalization prefigures the visual grammar that artists like Richard Outcault and Winsor McCay would systematize in the 1890s. This work demonstrates how the formal vocabulary of comics emerged from illustration practice.
