Chapel Design

Architect Arnold William Brunner's sketch of a small rural chapel demonstrates the architectural drawing traditions that preceded modern comic strip panels. The composition uses perspective, shading, and line work to convey structure and space—visual techniques that would soon define the nascent language of sequential art. Though not a comic itself, such architectural renderings employed compositional strategies and draftsmanship that influenced how early cartoonists learned to represent three-dimensional form on the page, laying groundwork for the visual vocabulary that emerged in newspaper comics during the 1890s.
