Two Sketches, Scott Cottage
Architect Arnold William Brunner's preliminary sketches for Scott Cottage reveal the design process behind residential architecture of the Gilded Age. The left drawing shows an exterior perspective with detailed ornamentation—a ornamental post, railings, and window treatments rendered in ink and wash. At right, a window elevation provides constructional specificity. Brunner's dual approach—combining picturesque composition with technical precision—typified late-nineteenth-century architectural practice, where hand-drawn studies served as essential tools for client presentation and builder instruction before standardized blueprints became universal.
