Two Sketches of Men

Arnold William Brunner's paired character studies exemplify the observational drawing that preceded modern comic strip conventions. These ink sketches of two figures—an older man with a peaked cap and a younger man in a bowler—demonstrate the gestural economy and facial caricature that would become fundamental to newspaper comics. Brunner's rapid linework and attention to posture and expression reflect the illustrative tradition from which comic artists drew their visual vocabulary.
