Sketches of Heads

Arnold William Brunner's study sheet demonstrates the character-development methods that would define newspaper comics. Arranged around a central stain, eight profile sketches explore variations in facial expression, hat styles, and physiognomy—visual notation practices essential to creating recurring characters for serialized strips. These rapid studies show the artist developing a visual vocabulary: exaggerated features, distinctive silhouettes, and economical line work that could be reproduced reliably across multiple panels and publications. Such sketchbooks were the laboratory where comic artists perfected the abbreviated forms and expressive distortions that would become the visual grammar of the emerging medium.
