Sketches at Piraeus
Arnold William Brunner, American, 1857–1925 · 1883

Arnold William Brunner's preliminary sketches capture figures observed at the Greek port of Piraeus. The sheet demonstrates the artist's working method: rapid pen studies of heads and full figures rendered with economical linework, alongside a wash study in ochre. Brunner's approach—isolating character types and poses for later compositional use—reflects practices developed by newspaper illustrators of the era. The varied scale and arrangement across the page suggest studies made directly from life or memory, later adapted for publication. Such sketch sheets reveal how 19th-century artists built visual vocabularies of gesture and physiognomy essential to narrative illustration and the emerging sequential art forms that would define early comics.
