St. John's River, Florida
Mary Nimmo Moran, American, 1842–1899 · 1882

Mary Nimmo Moran's etching captures a riverboat scene on Florida's St. John's River, rendered in the artist's characteristic linear style. A shallow-draft vessel laden with passengers navigates the dark water, while the shoreline features the distinctive tall pines and palmettos of the region. Moran, a pioneering American printmaker, employed dense cross-hatching and fine parallel lines to model form and atmosphere. The composition balances human activity—the crowded boat—against the vast, spare landscape, creating a sense of isolation despite the vessel's cargo of travelers. This work exemplifies late-nineteenth-century American landscape printmaking and Moran's technical mastery of the etching medium.
