A City Farm, New York

Mary Nimmo Moran, American, 1842–1899 · 1881

A City Farm, New York
Mary Nimmo Moran's etching depicts an urban farm nestled against New York's expanding cityscape. A farmer with horse and cart tends vegetable plots in the foreground, while multi-story buildings rise sharply behind. The composition contrasts agricultural labor with dense urban development, rendered in fine cross-hatching and precise line work characteristic of 19th-century printmaking. Moran was among the first American women to achieve prominence in etching, a medium requiring technical mastery and direct plate engraving. The work documents the tension between farming and industrialization in rapidly transforming American cities.
