Louis M. Glackens, American, 1866–1933 · ca. 1911

This sketch by Louis M. Glackels depicts a domestic scene with exaggerated facial features typical of early 20th-century comic illustration. A woman in a hat holds an infant while speaking to another woman carrying a basket. The single-panel format, expressive linework, and humor reflect the visual comedy found in newspaper comics of the era. Glackels and his contemporaries developed the visual vocabulary—expressive faces, gesture, spatial relationships—that would define comic narrative.
