Night in the Park

This is not a comic strip but an etching — one of the small, precise intaglio prints Edward Hopper made through the early 1920s before painting made him famous. A lone figure sits on a park bench beneath a street lamp, surrounded by empty benches and dense, scratched darkness. The lamp throws a hard oval of light across the path; everything beyond it dissolves into crosshatched shadow. Hopper's etching work of this period shares visual DNA with newspaper illustration — the same economy of line, the same high contrast demanded by cheap newsprint reproduction — the commercial world he inhabited while waiting for galleries to notice him.
