William Trost Richards (1833–1905) was an American landscape painter trained in the detailed observational methods of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. This preparatory drawing demonstrates his systematic approach to rendering natural forms—studying individual leaves, stems, and flowering plants with botanical precision. Such studies served as reference material for larger studio compositions. Richards worked primarily in oil and watercolor, becoming known for luminous landscapes of the American Northeast and abroad.
