Study of Foliage

William Trost Richards, American landscape painter (1833–1905), produced detailed botanical studies throughout his career. This ink drawing examines the structure of a slender tree with delicate branching and leaf patterns rendered with precise observation. Richards worked during the mid-nineteenth century when American artists increasingly turned to nature studies as both artistic practice and scientific inquiry.
