Landscape, Grindelwald, Switzerland

William Trost Richards, American, 1833–1905 · 1867

Landscape, Grindelwald, Switzerland
William Trost Richards sketched this Alpine landscape during travels through Switzerland, capturing the dramatic terrain near Grindelwald with pencil and wash. Richards, a leading American landscape painter, worked from nature studies like this one to develop his finished compositions. The drawing demonstrates his careful attention to geological formations and atmospheric effects—the towering cliff faces rendered through layered shading, the scattered rocks and rough terrain given sculptural weight. Such field studies were essential to nineteenth-century landscape practice, preserving direct observation before the artist returned to the studio to work up exhibition pieces. Richards exhibited widely and influenced the development of American landscape painting through both his works and his teaching.
