Study of Landscape

William Trost Richards, American, 1833–1905 · 1867

Study of Landscape
William Trost Richards, a leading American landscape painter of the nineteenth century, created this pen-and-ink study of a mountainous terrain. The drawing demonstrates Richards's characteristic approach to natural forms: careful cross-hatching defines the rocky slopes and geological structures, while minimal detail in the foreground—a few trees and buildings—establishes scale and human presence. This sketch likely served as preparatory work for a finished oil painting. Richards was associated with the Hudson River School and later adopted a more precise, detailed aesthetic influenced by Pre-Raphaelite principles. Such studies were essential to his practice, allowing him to work out compositional problems and atmospheric effects before committing to canvas.
