Seashore, Newport, RI
William Trost Richards (1833–1905) was a leading American landscape painter of the nineteenth century. This drawing demonstrates his meticulous observational technique, capturing coastal topography with precise pen work and careful tonal gradation. The sketch shows Richards's process of studying natural effects—the play of light on water, the disposition of rocky outcrops and vegetation—which he would translate into finished paintings. Working during the height of American landscape painting, Richards combined detailed draftsmanship with atmospheric sensitivity, developing compositions that balanced romantic sensibility with geological accuracy. His Newport studies document both the artist's working method and the site's transformation during the Gilded Age's resort development.
