Study of Landscape, Chester County, PA
William Trost Richards, a leading American landscape painter, executed this study of rolling Pennsylvania countryside with characteristic precision. The composition centers on two gnarled trees anchoring a sloping meadow, their bare branches rendered in dark, linear detail against a luminous sky. Richards employed watercolor's translucent washes to model the green fields and distant hills, while reserving opaque pigment for cloud formations. Working in the tradition of 19th-century landscape studies, Richards combined close observation of local terrain with atmospheric effects influenced by European Romantic painting. Such plein-air studies served as preparatory material for larger finished works and demonstrated the artist's sustained interest in depicting the natural world with geological and botanical specificity.
