A Courtyard
Walter Shirlaw's watercolor sketch depicts a sunlit Mediterranean villa nestled among terraced gardens and vegetation. Two figures occupy the foreground of this study in atmospheric perspective, while architecture and landscape recede into the distance under a pale blue sky. Shirlaw, a Scottish-born American painter and teacher, created such works as preparatory studies for larger compositions. His focus on light, color, and spatial depth—rendered through loose brushwork and selective detail—reflects academic training filtered through the plein-air practices gaining influence in late 19th-century American art. This sheet demonstrates the artist's working method: notation and color exploration rather than finished statement.
