Design for a Floor Covering

Lelia Huffman's ornamental design demonstrates the classical vocabulary of early 20th-century decorative arts. The composition combines Greek and Roman motifs—the meander pattern bordering the left edge, palmette and anthemion friezes across the top, and acanthus-inspired scrollwork in the corners—typical of Neoclassical revival design. The hierarchical arrangement of borders frames an open field, a layout convention for floor coverings and wallpapers of the period. Such designs were reproduced industrially for domestic interiors, making historical ornament accessible to middle-class households.
