Illuminated Initial 'B'

This ornamental letter demonstrates the decorative arts tradition of manuscript illumination adapted for modern reproduction. Artist Sara Ker rendered the capital 'B' with characteristic Victorian ornamentation: a blue ground populated with flowering vines, a red outline border, and a vibrant green frame studded with jewel-toned blossoms. Scrolling tendrils extend from the left margin. Such initials, rooted in centuries of calligraphic practice, remained popular in late nineteenth-century design, appearing in fine books, periodicals, and printed materials. The work reflects the period's synthesis of historical decorative vocabulary with contemporary chromolithographic techniques.
