Design for an Ornamental Colonette

Design for an Ornamental Colonette
Gertrude M. Clarke's architectural drawing demonstrates the decorative vocabulary of the 1890s, a period when ornamental design informed everything from buildings to printed materials. The colonette—a slender column—features a Corinthian capital with acanthus scrollwork above a shaft decorated with symmetrical foliate motifs in gold and jewel tones. This design tradition directly influenced the visual embellishments that would soon frame comic strip panels, including ornamental borders and decorative typography. The careful draftsmanship and color work shown here represents the commercial art practices that trained early comic artists in composition, proportion, and the relationship between decorated elements and readable space.
