Pembroke Castle

Ernest Clifford Peixotto, American, 1869–1940 · 1899

Pembroke Castle
Ernest Clifford Peixotto's pen-and-ink rendering captures the Welsh fortress in atmospheric detail. The artist employs fine cross-hatching to model the ruined towers and fortification walls rising from their peninsula, while delicate parallel lines suggest water and distant landscape. A gnarled tree anchors the foreground; modern buildings and utility lines visible at left ground the medieval structure in contemporary time. Peixotto was an accomplished illustrator and muralist whose landscape studies appeared regularly in major periodicals. This drawing exemplifies the careful architectural documentation that appealed to turn-of-the-century audiences fascinated by European history and picturesque ruins.
