Design for an Enframement

Homer Wayland Colby, an American designer and illustrator active in the early twentieth century, created this ornamental border design during an era when decorative frames shaped the visual presentation of printed matter. Though not a comic strip itself, such enframements were integral to newspaper layout and book design of the period. The interlocking geometric patterns and Art Nouveau flourishes reflect the stylistic vocabulary that surrounded comics as they emerged in Sunday newspaper supplements.
