Tailpiece

Franklin Booth, American, 1874–1948 · 1909

Tailpiece
Franklin Booth's decorative tailpiece showcases the ornamental tradition of newspaper illustration in the early twentieth century. The composition features grapevines laden with fruit, rendered in bold black and white contrast characteristic of wood-engraving reproduction. Booth, a master of pen technique, developed his distinctive high-contrast style through careful observation of natural forms and light effects. Such tailpieces—small illustrations that concluded newspaper columns or sections—served both functional and aesthetic purposes, marking transitions between editorial content while demonstrating the technical virtuosity expected of commercial illustrators during this period.
