Utagawa Kunisada, Japanese, 1786 – 1864 · circa 1855

This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada depicts a woman in elaborate dress posed before a Edo-period teahouse or entertainment establishment. Her richly patterned kosode robe, ornate hairpins, and poised stance reflect the visual conventions of ukiyo-e portraiture. The composition employs the artist's characteristic attention to textile design and architectural detail, with the building's framework and entrance visible in the background. Cartouches inscribe location information typical of the era's commercial prints. Kunisada was among the most prolific print designers of his time, producing thousands of images for Japan's urban entertainment districts during the nineteenth century.
