The Actor Yae Misazo
Utagawa Kunisada, Japanese, 1786 – 1864 · c. 1858

This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada depicts a kabuki actor in character, seated in an interior domestic space. The composition demonstrates the sophisticated spatial construction typical of mid-19th-century Japanese printmaking, with receding architectural elements and careful attention to perspective. A decorative lantern and wooden stand occupy the background, while the figure's striped garment and dynamic pose command the foreground. Red cartouches bearing Japanese characters identify the subject and artist. Kunisada's work exemplifies the actor portrait genre (yakusha-e), which celebrated kabuki performers at the height of the theater's cultural prominence during the Edo period. His prolific output and refined draftsmanship made him among the most commercially successful printmakers of his era.
