Study for 'Wedding Procession'

Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 · 1872

Study for 'Wedding Procession'
Elihu Vedder's preparatory sketch explores figure composition and drapery for a formal ceremonial scene. The drawing studies two poses—a rear view showing intricate hair arrangement and fabric folds, and a frontal figure bearing a tablet or board, both rendered in red chalk with selective ink accents. Vedder's technique demonstrates the academic method of isolating anatomical and textile effects before integrating them into a finished narrative composition. Working in the late 19th century, Vedder developed a distinctive style bridging neoclassical form with symbolist sensibility, establishing himself as a significant American illustrator and painter of historical and allegorical subjects.
